MGM says that the casino will be 'the first luxury gaming resort experience' in the region around the nation's capital. The property is next door to Washington D.C. on the banks of the Potomac River. The casino will have more than 125,000 square feet of gaming floor space, which includes a poker room, table games and more than 3,300 slots.
The casino should add to the state's roughly $3-million-a-month poker market, as well as the overall casino gambling market worth about $100 million a month.

The Potomac Poker Open is back at MGM National Harbor for the summer of 2019. The third annual running of this popular poker tournament series is set to take place at the 46-table MGM National Harbor Poker Room from July 25 – August 5. In addition, they will be adding 40 tables in the MGM Grand Ballroom. There are 15 events on the schedule, with more than $1.5 million in guaranteed prize pools up for grabs over the 12 days of top-flight poker action.

The centerpiece of the series is undeniably the $1,000,0000 guaranteed $3,300 buy-in no-limit hold'em main event. The tournament has three starting flights available, with 1A beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Aug. 2, 1B at 11:00 a.m. on Aug. 3, and 1C at 6:00 p.m. that same day. Players will receive 60,000 in starting chips.

Carlos Villamarin won the 2018 Potomac Poker Open main event, which was a $500,000 guaranteed $2,700 buy-in tournament that year. He overcame a field of 264 entries to win the title and the top prize of $163,350.

In addition to the two headlining no-limit hold'em tournaments, the 2019 Potomac Poker Open will also play host to a variety of games and formats, including a $370 five-card pot-limit Omaha event, a $585 eight-game mix event, a $250 senior's event, a $370 short deck event, and a $1,125 heads-up no-limit hold'em event.
